6 Questions with Chum Chum: Reflections on the ANDE Conference and Shell LiveWire
Mexico’s Chum Chum, a business that upcycles food waste into sauces and seasonings, won the Top Ten Innovators Competition in the environmental sustainability category this year and got a chance to participate in the ANDE Global Annual Conference 2025, a convening of business-owners, funders and corporate leaders aimed at fostering entrepreneurship. Shell LiveWire is one of the sponsors of the conference.
Chum Chum’s Chief Commercial Officer Adriana Macias delivered a talk on the company’s journey before a global audience, and she and Project Manager Fernanda Aguilar displayed some of their products at a booth and interacted with attendees. Fernanda and Adriana spoke to Shell LiveWire about their experience of the conference and how building networks is crucial for small businesses.

What was the highlight of the conference for you?
Getting to learn firsthand about the global challenges we face as an impact ecosystem, from the perspective of ANDE members, was incredibly enriching. We also built valuable connections with people and organizations who share our purpose of transforming the way we produce, consume, and think about food.
How did attending the ANDE Conference benefit Chum Chum?
The conference gave us the opportunity to give voice to Chum Chum’s mission, both during our talk and at our booth. It was a great moment to showcase what is possible when food is rescued, to connect with potential partners, and to demonstrate how circular innovation can generate economic, social, and environmental value at the same time.

How has winning the Top Ten Innovators competition helped your business?
Winning the Top Ten Innovators competition was a huge boost. It strengthened our relationship with Shell, who has been a key ally in our growth, and reaffirmed that what we do has real value in the market. Being evaluated by a panel of Shell experts validated our model and motivated us to keep reaching goals with purpose.
What are your future plans for Chum Chum?
To continue sharing Chum Chum’s mission and to build partnerships with more companies and organizations that believe in a different food system—one where every surplus has a new purpose and every bite counts.
What are the most valuable lessons you’ve taken from your Shell LiveWire experience?
We’ve learned that partnerships are essential to scaling impact. Shell LiveWire has taught us the importance of combining innovation with structure, and of always staying open to learning, exchanging ideas, and collaborating with other entrepreneurs.
What advice would you give other Shell LiveWire entrepreneurs on making the most of this network?
Be curious, open, and receptive. Take advantage of every conversation, mentorship, and piece of feedback. In this network, opportunities are born when we share authentically and collaborate with purpose.
